Edgecombe County schools honor staff and students; child nutrition program served 71,000 meals last summer

The Edgecombe County Board of Education used its Jan. 12 meeting to honor staff and dozens of students across the district. Presenter remarks highlighted Elizabeth Abrams, a third‑grade teacher at Stocks Elementary School, as the district's January Employee of the Month for her work as a highly effective math and multi‑grade instructor.
The board also presented Gold Key student recognitions across elementary, middle and high schools, naming students and principals from institutions including Baskerville Elementary, Stocks Elementary, GW Bullock Elementary, Carver Elementary, North Edgecombe High School and Martin Millennium Academy, among others. The board said these schools met or exceeded expected academic growth under North Carolina's accountability system.
District officials also recognized the Child Nutrition Department for receiving the Summer Feeding Rural Noncongregate Meals Innovation Award, noting the program served more than 71,000 meals to students across Edgecombe County last summer and extended service through the first day of school. Director Ruth McDowell and staff (Sandra Pettaway, Gabrielle Jenkins and Samantha Arrington) were acknowledged for the effort.
The recognitions were followed by a brief recess for student dismissal and then the meeting continued with public comments and business items.
