Director Sope presses staff on K–2 expansion at Pittsburgh Bridges Academy; staff say classrooms capped at eight

At an agenda review meeting July 15, the Pittsburgh Public Schools board heard details about a proposal to expand Pittsburgh Bridges Academy to include kindergarten through second grade. Director Sope asked how the district will coordinate the expansion and what specialized staffing would be required.

District staff member Patty Solak replied that the K–2 satellite model would mirror the district’s other satellite sites. "We would have two teachers, two paras, and a counselor, supporting that satellite site," Solak said. She added that the classroom would start with only two or three students and would be capped at eight students at any time.

The exchange centered on operational readiness: Director Sope pressed for clarity about both the number of staff and specialized roles needed to support young students in the expansion, and Solak replied with the staffing mix and a classroom-capacity limit. Solak also said the classroom’s maximum capacity is eight students and that initial enrollment is expected to be small.

The discussion tied the expansion to the district’s broader planning (referenced by Director Sope as the “future ready” plan), with board members seeking assurances that curriculum, staffing and coordination would be in place before the expansion proceeds.
