Board OKs NMSU’s proposed Ph.D. in Wildlife and Fisheries Ecology

The New Mexico State Board of Finance approved Jan. 15 New Mexico State University’s proposal to establish a Doctor of Philosophy degree program in Wildlife and Fisheries Ecology.
Dr. Martha Desmond presented the program and said external grants that support research "support the salaries of the students (approximately $28,000 per year), mentorships, attendance at conferences, trainings, etc." Members asked whether students benefit directly from grant funding; Dr. Desmond confirmed they do.
Member Joseph Lujan moved for approval; Member Paul Cassidy seconded. The motion passed unanimously.
The board’s formal approval authorizes the institution to proceed with program implementation consistent with applicable higher-education procedures.
