Trustees postpone decision on telescope policy pending review of Library of Things policy

Library Director Katie McGonigle presented the East Longmeadow Public Library’s current Telescope Policy to the Board of Library Trustees on June 12 and recommended further review.
McGonigle said the safety and use concerns covered in the Telescope Policy appear to be addressed in the library’s broader Library of Things Policy. Trustees discussed that overlap and did not take a final vote. Chair Amy Pawle noted the board wanted additional research and time to compare the two policies.
Trustees postponed a final decision until the board’s next regular meeting on July 10, 2026, giving staff time to return with proposed language or a recommendation. No formal vote to delete or amend the Telescope Policy was recorded in the minutes; the item remains under New Business for a future agenda.
