Eunice council backs Lea County Heroes banner program to honor veterans

The Eunice City Council on Feb. 23 voted to adopt the Lea County Heroes Program, a nonprofit initiative to place veteran tribute banners in the city with QR codes linking to biographical pages and multimedia.
Vasshawn Robinson, founder and chairman of the program, told the council the project began as street-pole banners honoring veterans and has expanded to include QR-linked web pages and edited interview videos produced with a local high-school class. Robinson said banners cost approximately $211 each; organizers also buy special brackets and insurance to cover wind damage and replacements.
Robinson described the selection process as managed by a local board of veterans and noted applications include background checks. He said banners are typically displayed for a set season so they do not become overlooked; larger cities often display banners from Memorial Day through Veterans Day. The council asked about slot limits and selection; Robinson said the proposed 22 slots could be expanded.
Council adopted Resolution No. 3530 to participate in the program. Mayor John Dean Davis welcomed the initiative and thanked veterans for their service.
