Eunice tightens network security policy to address cyber threats

The Eunice City Council on Jan. 5 approved an addition to the City Network Security Policy aimed at tightening access controls, securing mobile data computers used by police and fire, and aligning with state and federal guidance.
IT Director Richard Frederick said the city is moving some IT work in-house and is updating policy language to meet CIGS and FBI guidance and state water-security requirements. He told council he monitors two firewalls and sees cyberattack attempts from foreign IP addresses “every 15–20 seconds,” and said changes will include stronger passwords, wireless restrictions and accountability for mobile devices. Frederick said employee training on policy changes will be provided later.
Council approved Resolution No. 3520 unanimously. Frederick said the changes respond to an active threat environment and will improve the city’s cybersecurity posture.
