Council orders deeper review of consolidated fee schedule, raises dog licensing question

During new business on June 17, town staff reviewed the consolidated fee schedule and the council discussed the need for a comprehensive evaluation of permit, inspection, licensing, and development-related fees.
Council members raised concerns that several permit and development fees are significantly lower than those charged by neighboring communities and may not cover administrative and inspection costs as development increases. Questions were also raised about current inspection fees and whether existing contractual agreements could affect the town’s ability to adjust fees; staff said additional research is needed on contracts and expiration dates before making recommendations.
The council also discussed animal-control fees and long-unused dog licensing requirements. Staff noted older ordinances appear to require dog licensing but that enforcement has not occurred for many years. Council members asked staff to determine whether maintaining a dog licensing program remains practical or beneficial; the council tabled further fee-schedule action until department heads who could provide additional input are present.
No ordinance changes or fee adjustments were approved at the meeting; staff will return with research on contracts, ordinance status, and departmental recommendations.
