The North East Town Board on April 27 approved Ordinance 2016-04-01, granting a real-property tax credit to the North East Volunteer Fire Company for the commercial portion of its property known as the Chesapeake Ball Room. Director of Finance and Administration Kendrick Natale reported the tax credit had been requested by the fire company. Commissioner Michael Kline moved to approve the ordinance; Commissioner Hilary Crothers-Moore seconded the motion, which was approved by all present.
The ordinance implements a tax credit requested by the volunteer fire company for the commercial portion of its property. Natale described the measure as a response to the fire company's request; no fiscal detail beyond the request was presented at the meeting.
The board tabled Ordinance 2016-04-02, a draft rule for food and non-motorized recreational rental vendors at North East Community Park, until a full board could be present. Town Administrator Melissa B. Cook-MacKenzie and Director of Planning Betsy Vennell had met with local stakeholders on the draft. Local resident Kelly Benson, of 10 North Main Street, showed photographs of proposed nonpermanent kayak-storage options and said the kayaks "would have a chain run through them" and that he was "not concerned about theft." Mayor Robert F. McKnight voiced concern about overnight storage in the park.
The board did not vote on the vendor ordinance; members said they wanted the entire board present before acting. The town will return the item to a future agenda when a full complement of commissioners is available.
