Recreation committee elects interim officers and approves $400 for bocce sets; OKs fall youth soccer field use

The Newbury Recreation Committee confirmed interim leadership and several operational approvals at its July 2 meeting.

After noting a vacancy when Marcus stepped down, the committee voted to confirm a temporary lineup: John Regan as vice chair, the existing chair to remain, Mike as interim clerk and Mary Anastasia as treasurer. The motion to approve the committee’s interim lineup was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote.

On equipment spending, a motion to appropriate $200 for a bocce-ball set passed, but the chair then moved to nullify that vote and amend the appropriation to $400 to buy two sets; the amended $400 appropriation for two bocce sets was approved by voice vote. Committee members discussed procurement (Amazon was suggested) and who would make the purchase; John (speaker identified during motions) was asked to procure the sets and Cindy — a staff contact — was noted as the one who normally handles purchases.

The committee also approved the minutes for the June 1, 2026 meeting by voice vote and moved on to bills and claims and correspondence. In the applications portion of the agenda the committee formally approved the fall Triton Youth Soccer application on condition the group completes payments, insurance and other required paperwork.

Other operational discussion included field maintenance responsibilities for local baseball groups, ownership and use of stadium lights and how volunteer fundraising supports field upkeep. Committee members noted instances of out-of-date or conflicting field-house reservation guidelines and voted to circulate updated documents for pre-reading and a vote at a subsequent meeting.

The committee set its next regular meeting for August 3, 2026 at 6:30 p.m. and adjourned at 07:38.
