Board approves Cannon Township trail easement and several routine items; construction and communications updates presented

At its regular meeting the Rockford Public Schools board approved an easement that will allow Cannon Township to build a trail connecting to Rockford property, heard a construction update on bond projects and accepted a tentative wage settlement negotiated with the district’s bargaining team.

Trail easement approval and details: The board heard Item 1, a Camden Township (Cannon Township) trail update. Todd Wilson, a Camden Township trustee, described a rerouted trail alignment that keeps it on the south end of district property and avoids cutting mature trees. Wilson said the project originally tied to a $300,000 state grant, and that an earlier alignment would have required about $225,000 of district‑side funding to connect; the revised plan reduces that cost. Wage settlement, hiring and consent items: Dr. Corey Wilsongrove presented a tentative wage settlement negotiated with the district’s bargaining team and acknowledged negotiator Ray Plath in the audience; he described the package as an "overall 4.16" adjustment with a graduated schedule tied to comparable districts. The board voted to approve the settlement. The board also approved a certified staff hire (Andrew Cola, science teacher at North Rockford Middle School) and approved eight consent agenda items by voice vote.

Communications assessment: The board received a communications assessment from Seaford PR outlining six areas for improvement, including establishing a district communications lead, brand and messaging alignment, internal staff communications before public dissemination, visible leadership and storytelling, community engagement, and measurement/technology (including leveraging PowerSchool). The consultant proposed a phased implementation with early wins in 15–90 days and optimization over 10–12 months.
