The joint SAU board formally welcomed Doctor Kathleen Scholen to the SAU during its regular meeting. The chair introduced her to the board and members offered greetings.
Dr. Scholen thanked the board and described early onboarding activities: "Doctor Whelan's been very agreeable to letting me come in as of the SAU staff and all the administration in the buildings, in the schools, giving me the opportunity to meet staff, see the students in their classrooms before they ended for the day, enjoyed participating in 2 of the graduations, but generally wanting to build my understanding of the 3 districts and, you know, who they are, what their identity is." She said she was grateful for the opportunity and for Dr. Whelan's support in facilitating visits.
The chair highlighted upcoming schedule items and training sessions; members confirmed the next joint meeting on Aug. 24 in Freedom at 6 p.m. and noted Manchester School Board Association training would be scheduled between 6:30 and 6:45 p.m.
Why it matters: The board's welcome and Scholen's early outreach signal an onboarding period in which the new SAU leader is building familiarity with staff and schools ahead of the new academic year. The board and staff also clarified start-of-school dates: staff begin Aug. 31, Tamworth and Freedom students begin Sept. 8, and Madison moved its first day to Sept. 9.
What’s next: The board will continue onboarding activities and training this summer; substantive budget and enrollment items will return at the August meeting for decision.
