Preservationists and contractors describe restoration of Garvin House and urge community interpretation

A Palmetto Trust director said the restoration is intended for public access and education: "This is kind of a unique situation because most of the properties we work with do get turned into private homes. This is one where it really is gonna be like a museum, situation where the place is saved and the community can participate in learning about it," the director said.
The restoration contractor described the stabilization process, saying the team salvaged original flooring, documented and labeled each piece and intends to re-install original materials where feasible. The contractor noted the discovery of period artifacts and described construction methods used historically in the house.
Presenters urged use of the restoration report for brochures, signage and heritage tourism promotion.
Next steps: the town plans to use the restoration report in interpretive materials and to work with local preservation groups on public programming and signage.
