Waverly Parks Commission votes to pursue combined pickleball court and skating rink over Summerfield bathroom

On April 28 the Waverly Parks Commission voted to pursue converting the existing skating rink area into a dual-use pickleball court and skating rink rather than building a bathroom at Summerfield Park. Commissioners cited growing interest in pickleball, year‑round utility of a hard-surface court, and a desire to increase amenities on the west side of town.
Chairman Joe Gallus said preliminary concrete pricing for the court slab came in at roughly $60,000 and that he would consider reducing the size to control costs. Commissioners discussed protecting the court surface in winter by using a fenced rink to keep skaters off the slab until conditions are suitable, and they concluded that a dual-use facility would provide more consistent recreational value than a standalone bathroom at this time.
A motion by Joanna Borrell, seconded by Lexxy Nubbe, to pursue the pickleball court/skating rink project passed unanimously. Staff will continue design discussions and bring maps and cost refinements to a future meeting.
