At a public hearing, the police chief relayed conversations with local marinas and estimated commercial use. “There’s about 40 boats that they put in for Silver Lake,” the chief said, describing the scale of operations reported by one marina. The chief noted past major repairs to the launch and estimated maintenance needs around $170,000.
Board members and members of the public questioned whether the fee might be perceived as privatizing public access and whether residents would be charged. The board clarified that nonresidents pay launch fees while residents are generally exempt, and that the commercial fee targets commercial operators who put many boats through the ramp.
A Select Board member moved to set the commercial permit at $1,000; the board discussed an effective date and whether operators who already paid $100 this season would be prorated. The board voted to make the new commercial rate effective immediately/tomorrow; members indicated marinas that pre‑paid would be credited accordingly.
The board said the fee change is intended to cover repair and enforcement costs and to place commercial users on a similar footing with nearby towns that charge commercial seasonal permits. Town staff will finalize administrative details for enforcement and communicate pro‑rata policies to marinas.
