Committee okays small FTE increase to bolster regional crops and soils extension work

The Washington County Land Use and Planning Committee voted to increase the county’s share of a regional UW Extension crops-and-soils educator from 0.25 full-time equivalent to 0.33 FTE beginning in 2027.
Patty Carroll, Area Extension director, said the change responds to one participating county withdrawing from the shared 1.25-FTE position and would strengthen the county’s crops-and-soils and dairy extension presence. "UW Extension has proposed increasing Washington County's share of this FTE from 0.25 to 0.33, and we'd like to do this beginning in 2027," she said. Carroll added that the prorated cost for the remainder of 2026 would be less than $2,000 and that other budget offsets should keep the net effect neutral.
Supervisor Krebs asked about the contract billing schedule; Carroll said the Division of Extension bills annually in two installments and that the county had already paid a prorated installment. A motion to approve the county contribution was made and seconded; the committee voted to approve the change.
Next step: the budget and contract administration process will reflect the 0.33 FTE county share beginning in 2027.
