Nemeth said city and VPSO staff discussed enforcing existing city ordinances for ATVs and other vehicles, but emphasized the need to warn the community first. “If we’re gonna enforce… the community needs to be made aware prior to that enforcement that they do exist and we are going to enforce them,” he said, adding the plan is to start with written warnings and escalate to fines or other penalties if needed.
Residents and council members described recurring safety problems with minors operating motorized vehicles and with speeding during peak summer months. “A 7‑year‑old should not be in charge of a motorized vehicle unattended by an adult,” resident and council participant Harmony said, describing recent incidents she’d observed and urging immediate action to protect children.
Council members discussed complaint procedures and the practical limits of VPSO enforcement—VPSOs are not trained to perform standard traffic stops like troopers—so timely calls for service are important. Nemeth urged community reporting for dangerous incidents because delayed reports (for example, reports made days after an incident) prevent enforcement.
The council and staff agreed to distribute public‑notice materials announcing that ordinances will be enforced on a regular basis; during the meeting staff stated enforcement would begin Wednesday following outreach.
