Douglas County schedules Aug. 26 hearings, sets maximum 2027 levy for county and fire district

County staff told the Board of Douglas County Commissioners July 15 that they will notify the county clerk of the county’s intent to exceed the 2027 revenue-neutral rate and requested authority to set hearing dates for the budget and related taxing jurisdictions.
Staff recommended establishing a maximum county levy of 40.286 mills for the 2027 budget and scheduling a combined revenue-neutral-rate hearing with the annual budget hearing on Aug. 26 at 5:30 p.m. The commission praised the collaborative budget development and authorized staff to notify the county clerk and schedule the hearing by unanimous voice vote.
Staff also requested authorization to submit notice for Consolidated Fire District No. 1 to establish a proposed 2027 maximum levy of 9.883 mills and to hold that hearing the same night. Commissioners asked clarifying questions about the department’s planned hires; a fire department official said the goal is to hire six firefighters by Jan. 1 (or shortly thereafter) and to recruit captains and a chief within the first six months. The commission approved the notification and hearing date for the fire district unanimously.
Both items will return for formal public hearings on Aug. 26; staff will post required notices with the county clerk and include materials in the public packet.
