Residents raise storage concerns about new garbage carts; Board to revisit automated bin at North Bay stairs

At the June 15 Board of Trustees meeting residents raised practical concerns about the village’s new garbage carts and proposed a shared automated bin for the North Bay park stairs.
"The new garbage carts from Johns Disposal are too bulky for garage storage," resident Susan Hamilton told the board, requesting clarity about storage options. In response, President Roger Mellem and Clerk Dori A. Panthofer confirmed that carts may be kept outside without an enclosure, and that residents who want to install an enclosure must first contact the Board to determine whether a permit is required.
Later in the public-comment period, resident Jodi Reilley proposed installing an automated garbage cart at the top of the North Bay park stairs, noting that the new collection system ended previous practice of emptying Village-owned lakefront cans. President Mellem and Clerk Panthofer reiterated that the Board, not private residents, has authority to establish such services.
Trustee Paul Schroeder raised concerns about prior efforts to provide public trash cans, citing past problems with prohibited refuse being dumped next to cans. President Mellem described earlier public trash-can efforts as "failed experiments." The board concluded the proposal requires further deliberation and placed the item on the July meeting agenda for additional discussion.
The Board did not adopt any immediate policy changes at the meeting; staff were directed to add the item to the July agenda so trustees can consider options, permit requirements and potential management strategies.
