Markesan council approves amended 2026 budget, payroll change for ambulance staff and several bids

The Markesan Common Council on Oct. 14, 2025 voted to approve an amended 2026 budget for publication and a package of operational and maintenance measures, recording each motion as carried 4-0 on roll call.
Council President Mayor Slate called the meeting to order at 7:02 p.m. Clerk/Treasurer Tamra M. Harrington recorded roll call listing Ald. Abendroth, Ald. Kazda, Ald. Triemstra, Clerk/Treasurer Harrington and Mayor Slate as present; Ald. Thiem and Ald. Lager were recorded as absent. The minutes also note attendance by the Berlin Journal (Kristin Radtke) and David Haase of Dave’s Place.
In business taken up under new business, the council: approved the amended 2026 budget for publication (motion recorded as Triemstra/Kazda); voted to add ambulance staff to the city payroll for purposes of benefits and retirement contributions at a stated cost of $15.00 per employee; and approved multiple vendor bids for city maintenance and utilities.
Specific procurement and finance actions recorded in the minutes include a $3,250 contract with New Heritage Builders to repair or replace sidewalks at Hein Park, with $975 charged to the City and $2,275 to Utilities; a $1,800 contract with Capital Tree for tree removal at Soldier’s & Sailor’s Park and at City Hall; and a $5,993.85 contract with Ness Electric to repair variable frequency drives at the water/wastewater treatment plant. Each of those motions was recorded as carried 4-0 on a roll call vote.
The council also approved Alcohol/Soda Licenses for Dave’s Place (David Haase) for the license period ending June 30, 2026; the minutes record the motion as carried 4-0. By consensus the September 2025 Treasurer’s Report was filed for audit.
The minutes list several motions attributed to Ald. Prill (including approvals of committee minutes and an amendment specifying 325 S. Main St. violations letters). The roll call at the start of the minutes does not list Prill among those marked present; the minutes do not reconcile that attendance discrepancy, and it is recorded here as written in the minutes.
The council scheduled upcoming meetings (Keep Markesan Grand Committee Oct. 20, committee meetings Nov. 4, and Common Council Nov. 11) and adjourned at 7:40 p.m. The minutes are signed by Tamra M. Harrington, Clerk/Treasurer.
