Police chief says borough struggling to fill approved part‑time officer slot

Police Chief David Pernice told the Union City Borough Council on Aug. 27 that efforts to reach a candidate previously approved for hire have failed and he now assumes the candidate is no longer interested.
Pernice said he will contact the Civil Service Commission to schedule oral exams, send letters to prospective candidates and reach back out to the recruitment consortium list. "I have tried to make contact but have had no luck," Pernice said, adding that there are 32 candidates on the consortium list he can consult. He said his long‑term goal remains to staff two part‑time officers, though only one position had been approved by council.
Manager Cindy Wells and councilors agreed the borough will continue recruitment for a single approved part‑time position and directed the chief to proceed with exam scheduling and candidate outreach. The discussion did not include a formal vote beyond the council's earlier approval of the position.
The council did not set a public deadline for filling the position at the meeting. The next council meeting is scheduled for Sept. 16, when additional personnel follow‑ups could appear on the agenda.
