Councilors in Union City discussed whether to hire an additional full-time police officer at their July 23 meeting but did not approve the hire, in part because members raised concerns about unexpected stormwater repair costs.
“We owe the candidate an explanation for having him go through all this testing and evaluations. He is a good candidate and will be testing in the consortium,” Mayor Robert Wolf said, noting the candidate’s preference for a smaller department.
Jeremy Sterling of Centerville asked the council about its earlier decision not to hire another officer; the council indicated the topic would be discussed later in the meeting. Councilor Melissa Winkler said she was not aware the borough was pursuing another hire and expressed concern about the costs associated with recent stormwater issues. Councilor James Kerns also said stormwater problems and the related, unexpected costs influenced the decision, rather than any deficiency in the candidate.
The Police Chief provided the June 2024 report; the minutes record no follow-up questions about the report. The council later adjourned and entered an executive session to discuss personnel and contracts; the minutes state no action was taken in that session.
