Market staff warns of restroom and repair problems, consultant engagement delayed

Market staff told the advisory panel on July 16 that restroom problems and outstanding repair requests are an ongoing operational challenge and that selection of a consultant for market improvements may be delayed.
Stephanie said portable toilets were removed after vandalism and repeated functionality and cleanliness issues; the remaining single stall frequently had long lines and created problems during high-attendance days such as July 4. Emma, a committee member, said long restroom lines left vendors without reliable access: "If vendors aren't able to use the bathroom, that seems particularly... inhumane." Staff said they are discussing alternate approaches with partners including Kerrytown Shops.
On repairs, staff reported more than 10 open tickets with park operations for issues ranging from overflowing gutters and clogged drains to damaged signs, and said one drain-ticket has been open since October 2024. Stephanie urged park operations to prioritize fixes because some problems (notably a drain that floods the Detroit Street entrance) prevent safe access and require frequent temporary measures.
Separately, staff updated members on an RFP for a 12-month community-engagement process to guide market improvements and the market office. Staff said they had a preferred consultant but were awaiting approval from senior city leadership; the timeline may slip until August or into next year if approvals and budget reviews delay the selection.
Staff asked the committee to note these operational constraints while planning fall events and vendor moves, and said they will provide updates as approvals and repairs progress.
