Commission readies school tours, USS Independence model display and 300th-anniversary events

A first-grade class of 22 students requested a late-morning or early-afternoon May 5 tour that would visit the Town House, Old Burying Ground, Powder House and Faunce School. Commissioners raised safety and logistics concerns about walking the route and suggested bussing between some sites. Tom Vendetti offered to contact teacher Karen Lunde to confirm details and commissioners indicated they were likely to be available that day.
On exhibits, Ken Brack said a Drew family member had initially offered a separate USS Independence model but later withdrew the offer after learning the library already holds a model in storage. Members discussed displaying the library’s model publicly for Tom Vendetti’s Adams Center talk on May 26 and for a June 10 shipbuilding talk tied to 300th events. Ken said he would approach Nick about staging the model at the Adams Center or seeking selectmen approval for a permanent Town House display.
The 300th Anniversary Committee reported a Proclamation Day on June 27 that will include invited state dignitaries, the dedication of a Revolutionary War memorial and reenactments; a church bell ringing was discussed. A July 25 parade has local permitting complete and awaits final state approval. Kathy LaNatra said she is seeking Chronicle coverage in association with the 300th. The commission also reviewed plans for upcoming presentations including a Tom Vendetti talk at Wingate and an art show scheduled for May 9 across several venues.
