The Hammond City Council adopted five ordinances on July 14, including final approval of a variance to allow construction of the Sigma Tai Gamma fraternity house at 1504 North Oak Street and final adoption of a major subdivision that will create a parcel to be donated to North Shore Technical Community College.
City staff said the Planning and Zoning Commission recommended adoption on the fraternity variance and the subdivision by 4–0 votes. The subdivision, presented by staff, will not change zoning but will formalize the parcel to be transferred so the college can locate its proposed campus there. Resident questions at the public hearing centered on whether the parcel required rezoning; staff said the zoning already permits civic uses, so the rezoning request was withdrawn.
Council also approved final adoption of an expanded conditional use to permit placement of a mobile home at 904 Holton Hill Lane (District 1). Two street‑renaming ordinances passed as well: East Crystal Street will be renamed Charlie Muse Drive, and Campo Street will be renamed Saul Crier Senior Drive. Staff repeated that Planning & Zoning reported no opposition to the renamings.
Votes were taken by roll call. The clerk recorded the council’s motions and the ordinances were adopted as presented.
The council scheduled further discussion on budget and policy items for upcoming meetings and asked staff to continue outreach to nearby property owners regarding the college parcel.
The council adjourned after remaining general business was completed.
