The Saltville Town Council voted Jan. 8, 2025 to keep Erik Puckett in the position of Chief of Police until Feb. 11, 2025 at 11:59 p.m., after which the council will reevaluate the position and applications to replace him in light of his pending retirement. The motion, made by Suzanne Abramson and seconded by Eugene Call, passed by roll-call vote.
Separately, the council authorized Town Manager Cecile Rosenbaum to offer the Treasurer position to applicant Crystal Anders. That authorization was made on motion of Suzanne Abramson, seconded by Cary Sauls, and carried by roll-call vote.
Both personnel matters were discussed during a closed session convened under the Virginia Code exemption for personnel matters (Va. Code §2.2-3711(A)(1)). Council members reconvened in open session and certified that only lawfully permitted personnel matters were discussed. The meeting record does not include the detailed contents of the personnel deliberations or the terms of any employment offers beyond the authorization to extend the chief's appointment and to offer the treasurer position.
Next steps: the council will reevaluate the police chief appointment on or after Feb. 11, 2025; the town manager may proceed with the treasurer job offer and any subsequent hiring formalities.
