Organizers seek Town support for Clifton Cup; council recommends CBA management and promotion only
Summary
Organizers asked the Town to run the Clifton Cup on Sept. 30 and front about $15,000 in costs; council members said the event is better managed by the Clifton Business Association (CBA) to comply with FOIA and fundraising rules and agreed the Town can promote the event rather than host it.

Steve Bittner, representing Clifton Cup organizers, asked council to consider making the Sept. 30 Clifton Cup a Town event and to advance up-front costs estimated at about $15,000. Bittner said the event netted roughly $19,000 last year, with most revenue from sponsors.
Councilmembers discussed procedural and accounting differences between Town-hosted events and events managed by civic groups. Councilmember Steve Effros said the Town cannot run events that raise money for specific charities and that the event would need to be managed by a committee complying with FOIA and accounting rules; Effros said earmarking sponsorship proceeds would make the event less attractive.
Members concluded the Clifton Cup is better suited to remain with the Clifton Business Association and that the Town can assist by promoting the event and adding it to town calendars, rather than host or underwrite it. No funding was approved at the March 3 meeting.
