Student government election results and athletics updates highlight busy start to the year

A student government representative announced results of the Sept. 17 student government election: 66 total ballots were cast and two ballots were rejected for incorrect completion. The speaker said they won the school presidency and listed winners for vice president, parliamentarian and senior, junior, sophomore, and freshman class officers.

Speaking to the board, Josh Cooper said middle school is off to a strong start with about 98% of students completing MAP testing so far and several community events already held, including a grandparents and elders lunch that drew about 22–23 attendees. Cooper said the school has ordered a common novel (Sure Signs of Crazy) for a whole‑school book study and is implementing a differentiated reading supplement to support varied reading levels.

Mister Nieves reported an enrollment of 102 students and said the new earlier school start time has reduced tardiness and reportedly reduced cell‑phone incidents in offices. Nieves also described a testing glitch delaying some language‑arts MAP testing dates and asked families to reach out with concerns.

Dylan Stimp, the district’s athletic director, said cross‑country had a strong showing at a recent meet and that the varsity teams will travel to Sitka for regionals with seven boys and two girls competing. He outlined upcoming schedules: volleyball teams begin matches in Ketchikan this weekend, wrestling official practices start next Wednesday with a planned mid‑October home meet, and middle‑school basketball starts in about a week and a half.

The board thanked activity leaders and coaches and signaled it will consider coach‑recommendation items later in the meeting packet.
