Selectmen approve Align Old Lyme Food Share Garden's request to install a well at Townwoods Park

At its July 13 special meeting, the Old Lyme Board of Selectmen approved a request from Align Old Lyme Food Share Garden Incorporated to install a drilled well at Townwoods Park to irrigate the garden plots and reduce dependence on the park’s field irrigation system.
A representative for the nonprofit told the board the garden has relied on the playing-field system, which is turned on around early May and switched off in September, while the garden’s growing season begins in April and the group would like to extend watering into October and November. The representative said the garden’s contractor is familiar with the site and groundwater conditions and that the organization plans to finance, contract and maintain the well through donations and an endowment.
A selectman moved to approve the request and the board voted in favor. There was no opposition recorded in the meeting audio and the motion passed. The garden representative said contracting and drilling would begin pending property-owner permission and any required permits, with anticipated work in November–December 2026.
The action was recorded as part of the meeting minutes package; the board indicated correspondence from the garden had been shared with selectmen and would be included in the official record.
