Students and community groups report relief trip, events and local dues

Student government and community groups reported campus activities and a student-led relief effort during the board meeting.
Reese Taylor, the student government representative, said student government "will be taking 3 students to Anchorage tomorrow" to assist typhoon survivors and reported the group collected donations and supplies in town; he added that MRC pledged to reimburse up to $1,000 for supply purchases and that six boxes of MREs were provided. Reese said volunteers and community donations, including quilts from Sally Hayward and supplies from the AC Market, supported the effort.
Lorna Porter provided an MEA update, telling the board that local dues are being collected this month and that classified staff will see a one-time $60 MEA local dues deduction while certified staff will see $120.
Elementary staff member Shannon Hudson described classroom work on math using the Amplify assessment tool, efforts to set pre-K grant compliance (a pre-K handbook and webinar participation requirement), and upcoming family events including a Halloween parade and a literacy night on Nov. 20.
What happens next: Student government’s trip to Anchorage and receipt of MRC support were presented as community actions; the board did not take formal action on these items during the meeting.
