Residents press Otsego panel to act on speeding, unsafe e-bike riding on Radford Avenue

Residents of 5875 and 5601 Radford Ave. NE told the Otsego Public Safety Commission on June 9 that frequent speeding and reckless e-bike riding on their block threaten pedestrians and could lead to a serious crash. The comments came during the meeting’s open forum and prompted an extended discussion involving commissioners, City Council members and Wright County Sergeant Jason Oltmanns.
The residents described repeated incidents of high speed and hazardous operation of e-bikes by youth. Commissioners and Council members discussed short-term and long-term responses, including installing new stop signs, adding “slow” signage or street markings, deploying a radar trailer, increased enforcement by sheriff’s personnel, and holding a neighborhood meeting to raise safety awareness. Sergeant Jason Oltmanns noted the Sheriff’s Office has been receiving a large volume of requests for additional traffic enforcement countywide, which affects the availability of immediate enforcement resources in Otsego.
Mayor Jessica Stockman said she would refer the residents’ concerns to City departments to explore engineering, signage and enforcement options. The commission did not direct a formal enforcement action during the meeting; participants agreed to pursue staff and interdepartmental follow-up to evaluate the listed options and next steps.
The matter remains unresolved pending City staff review and any subsequent action by the council or law enforcement agencies.
