District reports note rising attendance, expanding arts programming and upcoming maintenance; board approves hires and policy readings

District staff presented a series of operational reports and recommendations covering attendance, arts programming, curriculum work, facility maintenance and personnel.
Shannon Hudson reported the district’s overall attendance is now above 91% and highlighted recent events including a veterans breakfast and a literacy night with roughly 160 attendees. Hudson also described continued arts programming — artist residencies, theater productions and classroom integration — and said staff are revisiting vertical-alignment work on priority standards. On social-emotional learning, Hudson said secondary grades currently lack a formal SEL curriculum and recommended surveying teachers about needs and curriculum alignment.
Facility and operations updates included a proposal to contract vendor services for annual boiler maintenance, a postponed generator installation due to design and sourcing delays, and the need to replace a 20-year-old freight van used by facilities and other departments. The superintendent (on the record in the meeting) said estimates for a replacement van are being gathered and will return to the board.
Personnel and policy actions: the board moved and approved action items 1–6. The items recorded on the public record included multiple extra-duty hires and coaching assistants, a staff travel authorization for a MTSS/RTI conference, first readings of an Internet-use policy and a student Internet user agreement, a cell-phone policy update, charter school policy updates, and an MOA for transportation services.
On high-school matters, a staff member described the college-and-career fair, MAP testing and athletic scheduling pressures; the high school is reporting 99 students enrolled and an 89% attendance rate. That speaker also noted “there’s some new restrictions that the state has put forth for our Alaska Performance Scholarship” and said families will receive required information about revised eligibility criteria.
The board recorded these reports and approved the personnel and policy items by voice vote before scheduling the January work session and adjourning.
