Maple Valley board approves 2026–27 calendar and accepts three resignations

Maple Valley School Board members on Jan. 7 approved the 2026–27 school calendar and accepted three staff resignations during a regular meeting in Tower City.

President Joey Bata called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. and the board voted unanimously to adopt the calendar after a brief discussion. Board member Dustin Theurer moved the calendar approval, seconded by Amanda Olauson.

The board also accepted the retirement of Cindy Kapaun, and the resignations of Faith Chambers and Cameron Pitts; motions to approve each resignation were made by Jennifer Koller with seconds from George Richman or Amanda Olauson, and each motion carried unanimously. Board members thanked the departing employees for their service.

In administrative reports, the Superintendent said work is needed on the new gym locker room, that a paraprofessional position has been filled, all storm days have been used and a sidewalk project is underway; the Superintendent also announced that the administrative assistant resigned effective the day of the meeting and the position would be posted the next day. The High School Principal reported a motivational speaker event co-sponsored by Maple Valley Student Council and Hope‑Page, completion of first‑semester exam make‑ups, schedule changes and implementation of the Edia math program for junior high students. The Elementary Principal said three student teachers are placed this semester and a new para has been added.

The Athletic Director reported junior high basketball has 22 players, that Capstone Academy will be added to the basketball region next year, and that baseball and softball regional alignments may expand. A School Resource Officer gave no report.

During the public comment period, Meridee Erickson‑Stowman spoke about her view of the district's culture.

The board scheduled its next regular meeting for Feb. 11 at 6:30 p.m. at the Sheyenne Valley Career and Tech Center and adjourned at 6:41 p.m.
