Randleman approves fire department equipment exchange and donations; board sets advisory board pay at $60

The Randleman Board of Aldermen on Sept. 3 unanimously approved a series of fire-department equipment actions and routine administrative items, including an equipment exchange, donations of surplus gear to local volunteer departments and a nonprofit, and a small annual stipend for advisory-board members.
Fire Chief Brian Causey asked the board to approve an exchange of a Safe Air three-station fill pack and four 4,500-psi DOT bottles (valued at $3,800) for four in-date, hydrotested 6,000-psi DOT bottles and a new rescue-truck control panel of equal value. Alderwoman Nancy Henderson moved to approve Resolution 24-08 authorizing the exchange; Alderwoman Kimmy Williams seconded, and the motion carried unanimously.
Causey also requested that surplus SCBA equipment and turnout gear no longer useful to Randleman Fire Department be donated to Seagrove Volunteer Fire Department, Staley Volunteer Fire Department and Tabernacle Fire Department. The board approved Resolution 24-09 as amended to correct the resolution’s description to "surplus SCBA Equipment and Turnout Gear."
In a separate donation, Causey requested additional surplus turnout gear and SCBA equipment for Global Gear Initiative, Inc.; meeting materials included a letter from the nonprofit assuming liability for the donated items. Alderwoman Henderson moved to approve Resolution 24-10; Alderwoman Williams seconded and the board approved unanimously.
The board also approved a staff recommendation to pay Planning and Zoning and Board of Adjustment members $60 per member per year, with payment scheduled for Oct. 1, 2024. Alderwoman Williams moved to approve the rate and schedule; Alderwoman Henderson seconded and the board approved unanimously.
During public comment, Ms. Renee Bryant of 417 South Stout Road asked the board to consider "something bright and motivational" for a city mural and offered to organize the project; the mayor and board thanked her for the suggestion.
Why it matters: the exchange and donations allow the fire department to refresh in-service equipment and place out-of-service items with volunteer departments and a nonprofit that will assume liability for some items. The board’s approval of the advisory-board stipend is a routine administrative action. The mural suggestion was noted during public comment but no funding or staff directive was made at the meeting.
The meeting adjourned after the agenda items were completed; staff will follow up on the donations and the board-pay payment schedule.
