Auditor Craig Hashbarger of Widmer Roel told the Mapleton School Board on Aug. 25 that auditors found sufficient documentation to issue clean audit reports for fiscal years 2020 and 2021 and that instruction (teacher salaries and benefits) represents the district’s largest area of spending.
Superintendent Jenna Farkas said she has prepared a budget spreadsheet to be shared at the finance meeting; the document lists current enrollment at 206 students with 31 PreK students. Farkas said the board will continue discussions on class sizes and whether to staff three kindergarten classes next year as part of finalizing the budget in October.
Teacher Chelsea Jaegar reported that the first three days of school “went great” and described two newly created student spaces: “The Cloud” and “The Nest,” which are intended to give students a place to go when needed.
Folio reports raised operational concerns. The meeting text notes the district’s electric bus will receive a new windshield and that routes are very full; the second route returns to school at about 8:20 a.m., prompting questions about the cost of contracting additional bus service. Facilities notes included three out-of-service HVAC pumps (Johnson Controls has been contacted), concrete pulling away from the building, windows that need resealing and an anticipated front-sidewalk repair. Curriculum reports said the district is operating with minimal paraeducator coverage this year.
No new budget appropriations or contracts were recorded at the meeting; the board scheduled additional finance discussion for the Sept. 8 finance meeting and said it will continue levy conversations before the October budget deadline.
