Community education director reports growth in summer classes and memberships

Angie Drew presented a summer update on community education to the Merrill Area School District Board on July 15.
Drew said the spring catalog offered 52 classes; 10 did not run and 11 sold out. "We had 450 new member registrations," she said, adding that 196 people participated in community education courses this spring. Popular offerings included woodworking, welding, sourdough baking, cookie decorating, guitar, estate planning and gardening.
Drew told the board the program has increased outreach by targeting nearby community pages and social media, which helped recruit new instructors as well as participants. She said the program oubled its social followers to just under 800 and is experimenting with improving on-site signage so attendees can find class locations more easily.
Looking ahead, Drew said planners are considering family trips and themed movie/craft nights for spring, while continuing to refine the class catalog to focus on sessions that attract sufficient enrollment. She said the program is also moving swim registration and payments to the district payment tool to reduce cash handling.
