Merrill Area School District board adopts state standards, renews memberships and approves contracts and handbooks

The Merrill Area School District Board of Education approved a slate of routine motions at its July 15 meeting, including adoption of state academic standards and several administrative items.
The board voted to adopt the Wisconsin academic standards for the 2026–27 school year under Wisconsin Stat. section 118.30. Paul Prew moved to approve the standards; Brett Waller seconded. The motion passed.
Trustees also approved the 2026–27 Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) membership renewal. Amber Deruzzo moved to approve the renewal; Mike Hornisher seconded, and the motion carried.
The board approved an updated activities code of conduct and activities handbook for 2026–27 on the recommendation of the CTP committee. Amber Deruzzo moved; Brett Waller seconded.
A three‑year contract with Cartwheel for telehealth services was approved. The district will pay $7,350 in 2026–27, $22,050 in 2027–28 and $29,400 in 2028–29, paid from DPI mental‑health allocated funds. Mike Hornisher made the motion; Amber Deruzzo seconded.
The board also approved revised 2026–27 support staff and teacher handbooks (motion by Mike Hornisher; second by Paul Prew) and accepted a donation of piano class supplies from Lepecker Broker Trust valued at $5,256.60 for the Merrill High School music department (motion by Mike Hornisher; second by Paul Prew).
On policy, the board approved a technical correction to Policy 7540.03 (student technology and acceptable use), checking an internal-box to clarify district‑approved social media platforms for district communications; the motion was made by Nubs Sashbeck and seconded by Donna Borcawell Gunther.
At the consent-Agenda vote, trustees approved minutes from June 17, claims/vouchers/receipts totaling $4,268,892.85, donations totaling $500, personnel items (with hires contingent on contract release and satisfaction of any liquidated damages) and multiple policy second readings. The consent agenda motion was moved by Mike Hornisher and seconded by Nubs Sashbeck.
The board closed the meeting by voting to move into executive session to review administrator and supervisor evaluations under Wisconsin Stat. § 19.85(1)(c).
