Richland County committee agrees to seek restoring 'Judiciary' to public safety panel title

Members of the Richland County Public Safety Standing Committee on July 10 agreed to forward consideration of changing the committee's name to restore an explicit reference to the judiciary.
Court staff and the clerk argued that removing a reference to the courts in the committee name makes the judicial branch appear to be an afterthought. “Throughout the years, this committee has had different names… for a long time, it was law enforcement and judiciary,” a clerk said, urging recognition of the courts’ statutory functions.
Committee members discussed procedural steps required to change the name. Members agreed that a formal resolution would be needed and that county information technology and communications (MIS) and all county publications would require updates once a resolution is passed. One committee member characterized the recent omission as a likely clerical error that became permanent and said restoring the name would require careful checks to avoid inconsistent references across county documents.
A motion to forward the naming recommendation to Executive & Finance was made, seconded and approved by voice vote. Committee members instructed staff to draft the resolution language and prepare website and publication update plans for Executive & Finance review.
The matter will be considered next by Executive & Finance, with the committee seeking to ensure that any changes are reflected consistently across county materials.
