Residents urge Mercer to preserve holiday displays and consider hiring maintenance help

Resident Jon Schumann told the council the town missed an opportunity to welcome visitors this past holiday season when the city did not continue decorative lighting in the park. "This past holiday season we missed our opportunity of welcoming and spreading the holiday cheer," Schumann said, and he asked how the city will ensure it does not happen again.
Schumann praised the seasonal work of Randy Zinke, saying, "Randy Zinke has done an outstanding job running city equipment throughout the seasons from lagoon maintenance, mowing, snow cleanup and other city jobs." He asked whether responsibilities for operating the equipment should be distributed among elected officials or whether the city should hire an assistant maintenance person.
Mayor Lori Stute acknowledged Zinke's volunteer work and said the city needs to determine how those duties will be covered when he is unavailable. The council did not take immediate action or set a hiring timeline at the meeting.
