Board raises concerns about state attendance changes, asks for clearer calculations and outreach

At the July 14 work session, the Revere Local School District board reviewed proposed policy language tied to a state change in how absenteeism is calculated and raised concerns about implementation, communication and potential unintended consequences.

Trustees noted the revised calculation is based on statutorily required instructional hours, which may differ from the district calendar. Board members worried that families tracking attendance by the district calendar could be surprised by earlier warning letters. One trustee said, “It's a big change for people,” and pressed administrators for clarity on when the district would begin counting and how parents would be notified.

Administrators said they would verify whether the district must use statutory hours or the locally built calendar when generating attendance triggers and promised informational nights to explain the changes to families. Trustees also raised concerns that stricter, earlier warning letters could encourage parents to send mildly ill children to school to avoid a record of chronic absenteeism; administrators said they would try to balance enforcement with flexibility and communication.

The board agreed to seek specific answers before a second reading of the policy, including how the district will calculate trigger thresholds, which absences are excluded (for example, sanctioned field trips or internships), and how the district will message the change so families are not confused by different accounting methods.
