McCandless EAC plans fall events, Bird Town outreach and grant applications

Audrey said the tree subcommittee has been dissolved as a formal group but that tree‑adoption events and a tree‑tender workshop (capped at 25 participants) remain scheduled; she identified Oct. 17 as a target date for tree adoption and training. "We do have the tree adoption and ... the tree tender program as well, which can hold up to 25 people," Audrey reported.
Members confirmed a Garden Park outreach event on July 25 and a staffed EAC booth at National Night Out on Aug. 4. The committee agreed to print a recycling “cheat sheet” and reuse spinning‑wheel graphics for engagement with children at the booth. Volunteers and members offered to donate prizes and staffing for short shifts.
The committee also reviewed Bird Town PA and related accreditation work discussed on a June 18 call with PA Autobahn; staff said the township may be positioned to move from green to silver accreditation, and noted a $1,000 grant from the Pittsburgh Foundation plus a potential $1,000 Bird Town PA mini‑grant to support outreach and walks. "We were awarded a $1,000 grant from Pittsburgh Foundation," the chair said.
Members discussed partnering with regional EACs and university programs (Penn State LCAP) for climate‑action support and interns for feasibility studies on solar or charging stations. The chair encouraged attendance at a regional EAC meeting on July 16 and noted a statewide WeConservePA conference on Oct. 24 with a July 24 deadline to submit session proposals.
The committee agreed to schedule parkwalks at Potter and Pontiac parks in September to inform recommendations on possible volunteer projects and asked staff to return a September date for a two‑hour site visit.
No formal votes were recorded on these outreach items during the meeting; members asked staff to continue coordinating dates, volunteers and grant applications.
