Navajo Prep highlights IB acceptance of Navajo language, cross-country state titles and student request

School leaders and trustees used the Nov. 15 board meeting to share academic and extracurricular highlights and outreach updates.
Head of School Shawna Becenti introduced staff and announced athletic and curricular developments: the boys cross-country team won the 3A NMAA State Championship and the girls team placed third. Becenti said the International Baccalaureate has accepted Navajo language as a Group 2 requirement, enabling students to continue Navajo-language coursework while pursuing the IB Diploma Programme; she thanked staff including Kevin Belin, Dustin Begay, Keith Neil and Giovanni Romeo for their efforts.
Kevin Belin, Director of the Diné Bizaad Institute, provided an invocation and reported on the school's Navajo language assessment work tied to the IB acceptance. Becenti and Dr. Darah Tabrum summarized a recent visit with the IB and Aiglon College and shared next steps related to campus development and outreach. Manuel Watchman provided an update on October 2024 financial reports.
Student Senate President and Ad-Hoc board member Haylei Redhouse shared class highlights and requested donations of blankets to be used as graduation stoles for the Class of 2025.
Board members reported on recent outreach events including Discovery Days and a virtual town hall. The meeting adjourned at 12:02 PM.
