Navajo Prep board approves MOU with NMPED pending BIE review, authorizes bank changes and NIEA nomination

At its Aug. 16, 2024 meeting the Navajo Preparatory School Board of Trustees approved a set of administrative resolutions including a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the New Mexico Public Education Department, a bank account authorization, continued agreement with the New Mexico Peer-to-Peer Helper Program, personnel memos for resignations and new hires, and travel requests for school leaders.
Head of School Shawna Becenti reviewed the MOU with NMPED; Associate Head of School Keith Neil told the board that the memorandum will be sent to the Bureau of Indian Education for final approval. The minutes record the board’s approval of this resolution alongside other New Business items by a voice vote of 3-0-0.
Manuel Watchman, Division Director of Business and Human Services, presented a resolution authorizing him to convert non-interest-bearing accounts to interest-bearing checking accounts as needed. The board approved that authorization in the same motion.
The board also approved continuation of the New Mexico Peer-to-Peer Helper Program agreement and a nomination of Head of School Shawna Becenti to serve on the National Indian Education Association (NIEA) board; Dr. Darah Tabrum said the nomination would benefit Navajo Prep and other tribally controlled schools. The board approved New Business items A–E by motion of Dr. Bernadette Todacheene, seconded by Craig Sandoval, vote 3-0-0.
Separately, Human Resource Manager Lynwandowski Filfred reviewed personnel resignations and new hires; the board approved those personnel memos (Items A–B) by voice vote, 3-0-0. The board also approved travel for the Head of School to attend the NIEA Convention and Trade Show in Palm Springs, Oct. 9–12, 2024, and for staff to attend the CASE/NAIS conference in Washington, D.C., Jan. 26–28, 2025 (an additional advocacy day in D.C. was requested). That travel motion passed 3-0-0.
