ARB denies painting old brick for Thompson Tire; commission hears update on downtown mural finalists

Chair (S1) told the Planning Commission on Nov. 11 that the Architectural Review Board reviewed a request from Thompson Tire to repaint a side wall and add a large red band and sign. The ARB denied painting on old brick and reiterated guidance preferring front-lit or backlit signage rather than internally lit signs for the historic downtown district.
"No paint on the old brick," Chair (S1) said, summarizing the ARB’s response. Commissioners noted the ARB’s role in preserving historic appearance downtown and discussed where the ARB’s jurisdiction begins and ends along Randolph and Madison avenues.
Separately, the commission received an update on a proposed mural at the fine arts center/old bank building. Chair (S1) said the town would select three finalists who would be paid to advance proposals and that public input would be sought. The mural will cover the lower side-wall windows visible from the bridge and will not extend to the top windows.
No formal planning action was taken on either the Thompson Tire paint request or the mural selection during the meeting; the ARB decision stands for the paint request and the mural project will proceed to the finalist selection stage.
