Officials say new Hoke County High School is on track for August ribbon-cutting; contingencies remain

A project presenter for Hoke County Schools told trustees on Tuesday that construction at the new Hoke County High School is nearing completion and remains on schedule for a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Aug. 6 at 10 a.m., with staff scheduled to occupy the building Aug. 10 and students arriving Aug. 24.
The presenter said crews have finished many interior and exterior elements and that classroom furniture deliveries and final commissioning work are under way. "The project will stay in budget," the presenter said. He reported that progress payments are "just shy of 88%" and walked trustees through contingency balances.
According to the presentation, the owner contingency started at $1,300,000. The presenter said combined contingencies for contractor, design and owner amount to just over $2,400,000, with about $352,000 remaining; he noted a set of contingency items under review that total roughly $29,000 and said that if those are confirmed there would still be about $322,000 remaining.
The presenter also said the contractor has used about 94% of its contingency and that the architect’s contingency usage had been reported at 225% (the presenter attributed that latter figure to prior scope adjustments and value engineering). He described a process of punch lists, re-inspections and a commissioning agent testing mechanical systems to ensure readiness.
Trustees asked for clarifications about railings and kitchen equipment; the presenter said rail fabrication is underway and that kitchen equipment will be brought online for staff training on Aug. 11–12 so the site can obtain food-service permits and stock food and milk ahead of the school year.
Board members and staff said they plan to host the board’s meeting at the new school in September if not August. The project presenter concluded that furniture and finishing phases will be complete before the ribbon cutting and that the district will present priorities for any remaining unencumbered funds to the board for future spending decisions.
