Council hears request to rename Centennial Park for Cindy Light; members favor on-site recognition over renaming

"We are requesting not only to rename the park but a dedication ceremony and a plaque to commemorate her memory," the letter read, as read aloud to the council by the chair.
Council members uniformly praised Light's long service and contributions. One councilor said he worried about where the line is drawn if the community starts renaming large public spaces and suggested alternative forms of recognition. "I think some sort of recognition is appropriate and I would suggest in lieu of renaming perhaps a bench," he said.
Another councilor and multiple members proposed a small flower garden or a named bench or plaque in Centennial Park that relates to Light's longtime floral contributions. The council agreed staff should consult with Turner's group and report back with specific suggestions and cost estimates; no formal vote to rename the park was taken.
The council emphasized they wanted to include the requesters in any planning for a memorial and to avoid unilateral decisions that change long-standing place names without community input.
