Utica approves AED purchase, ammunition and grant‑funded TASERs for police department

The Utica City Council approved multiple police department purchases and budget adjustments June 9 after Chief Matthew Kaluzny briefed members on a recent donation and grant award.
A local business donated $5,100 to the department. Council approved spending up to $4,200 of those funds to purchase two Physio‑Control LifePak CR2 automated external defibrillators, and approved purchasing duty ammunition totaling $3,727, split between department lines. Council also approved a budget amendment to increase the AED budget line by $4,200 to facilitate the purchase. All motions were moved and seconded and passed on unanimous roll‑call votes.
Chief Kaluzny said Representative Ron Robinson helped secure a state Law Enforcement Officer Grant (LEO grant E20260017) that will fully fund the department’s planned purchase of six Axon TASER 10 devices and associated equipment for $38,998.80. Council approved that purchase by motion; the grant covers the entire cost so no city funds were required.
Council additionally approved an annual preventative maintenance agreement for the police generator and a $500 administrative budget transfer to cover generator maintenance expenses. Chief Kaluzny also announced the hiring of a new officer, Jacob Mason, who is scheduled to be sworn in at the July council meeting.
All police‑related motions passed unanimously on roll call.
