Oak Bluffs EDC to explore bus and cruise-ship logistics, ice-rink pilot and business outreach

At its first meeting on June 16, the Oak Bluffs Economic Development Council assigned members to pursue logistics and outreach for summer visitor activity and local events.
Greg Orcutt (joining by Zoom) offered to lead coordination of commercial bus parking and cruise-ship pickup arrangements and suggested the council present to the Chamber of Commerce executive committee to explore partnership opportunities. Mark Leonard and others discussed outreach to local newspapers (referred to as the Gazette and the Times) to introduce the EDC’s formation and invite participation.
Larkin Stallings reported finding a purchase option for an ice rink priced at about $90,000 but said members preferred testing demand with a rental model before committing to a capital purchase. Kathryn Shertzer was tasked with contacting youth and high-school hockey organizers, basketball contacts and the Y to gather tournament schedules and assess potential off-season activity that could support a rink pilot.
Other immediate tasks included drafting a letter to local businesses about the council’s goals and inviting them to future meetings; Stephanie Wolf agreed to draft that letter and report on outreach progress at the next meeting. Matt Henderson will continue work on a fireworks-banner design and coordinate funding for mounting brackets.
The council confirmed plans to meet every other week and to follow up on the assigned outreach and logistics items at the next meeting.
