The Mount Airy City Board of Education met Aug. 19, 2025, and approved several routine and substantive items by roll-call vote.
Policy 4400 (Attendance) was approved on first reading after a motion by Jayme Brant and a second from Ben Cooke. The roll call recorded votes in favor from Tim Matthews, Ben Cooke, Jayme Brant, Thomas Horton, Kyle Leonard and Randy Moore; Mark Welch was recorded as absent. The minutes record the motion as "approved as presented," but provide no text of policy changes in the published minutes.
The board also approved monitoring reports and a consent agenda moved by Kyle Leonard and seconded by Jayme Brant. Items on the consent list included the Monthly Budget Report; a Soliant sign-language interpreter contract; an Occupational Therapy contract; a Soliant Deaf and Hard of Hearing contract; discretionary admissions; field trips and fundraisers; and minutes for meetings held May 20, June 24, July 11, July 12 and Aug. 11. The roll call again recorded six votes in favor and one absence. The minutes do not list dollar amounts or contract terms for the contracts approved under consent.
The board convened a closed session at 7:32 p.m. after a motion by Kyle Leonard and a second from Randy Moore. The stated reasons were to prevent disclosure of privileged or confidential information under Chapter 132 of the General Statutes and to consider personnel matters. The board returned to open session at 7:51 p.m., and upon return approved the Personnel Report on a motion by Kyle Leonard, seconded by Jayme Brant; the recorded vote was six in favor, one absent. The minutes do not disclose personnel details discussed in closed session.
Other meeting items recorded in the minutes included a chairman's announcement of a Board breakfast and walk-through at BHT on Sept. 3 and agenda-listed superintendent reports on teaching and learning and operations; the minutes contain the agenda entries but not substantive report text. The meeting adjourned at 7:52 p.m. on a motion by Ben Cooke and seconded by Jayme Brant.
