The Emerald Isle Board of Commissioners approved a resolution authorizing the town manager to execute a lease agreement for temporary housing of Fire Station 2 while a new station is constructed.
Fire Chief Parker told the board the town has identified a two‑bedroom duplex at 103 24th Street as a temporary location that can house an ambulance, an engine company and a rescue unit (including a jet ski) and accommodate four shift personnel. Construction of the new Station 2 is scheduled to begin in early August with a projected completion of 10–12 months; staff recommended an initial six‑month lease with month‑to‑month continuation if necessary.
Chief Parker reported the lease would be executed with Coppersmith LLC at a rate reported in the transcript as "$19.50 per month" with a maximum cost not to exceed $25,350 (a 12‑month period plus a one‑month refundable deposit). Chief Parker said staff expects to seek FEMA approval to cover the lease payments but would identify alternative town funds if FEMA determines the expense ineligible.
Town Manager Frank Rush said the town anticipates using some FEMA funding for the lease payments and that the fund‑approval process may take time. Parker added that the town plans to stage an older engine outside to preserve the newer engines and that the older engine may be sold at auction once the new station opens.
The board voted to adopt the resolution authorizing the town manager to execute the lease agreement. Staff will proceed to finalize the lease and coordinate any FEMA application required to seek reimbursement for the lease payments.
