Council accepts Veterans Park conversion bid contingent on 70-foot flagpole approval

The Lafayette City Council voted June 11 to accept the base bid for the Veterans Park Conversion Project from Tyron Creek Landscaping Inc. for $197,819.50, contingent on the city's ability to obtain approval for a 70-foot flagpole.
City Engineer Gordon Munro updated the council on the rebid process and outcomes. Councilor Lee Gilgan said he would recommend moving forward only if the project includes a 70-foot flagpole or else delaying the flagpole installation. Council President Kayla Paulsen moved to accept the base bid contingent on obtaining a 70-foot flagpole and to accept an alternative bid amount of $188,795 if restricted to a 40-foot pole; Councilor Russell Burrows seconded.
The motion passed 4–2. Councilors Paulsen, Jessica Kitt-Hill, Burrows and Craig Maki voted aye; Councilor Gilgan and Councilor Joseph Carswell voted nay. City Administrator Branden Dross was directed, per the motion language, to apply to the Planning Commission for a major variance to seek approval for the taller flagpole.
